The U18 Tier 3 National Hockey Finals on Monday 3 February saw some thrilling matches and intense competition, with the College’s U18 team coming out as one of the standout teams of the day.

The event, held at the Nottingham Hockey Centre, brought together top school sides from across the country, all vying for the prestigious national title.

The tournament began with a strong showing from the College, who faced Shrewsbury School in their first group match. The team came out with intensity, dominating possession and maintaining a tight defensive formation. Goals from Kiana H and Amelia L saw the team secure a 2-0 win. The first goal came from a well-worked move down the right-hand side, with the second following soon after from a counter-attack that caught Shrewsbury off guard. The defensive line, led by a rock-solid goalkeeper Izzy E, ensured that Shrewsbury could not break through, setting the tone for the rest of the tournament.

In their second group game, the College faced Reading Blue Coat School, and again, the team impressed. A similar performance saw them dominate the match, winning 2-0. Their first goal was a clinical finish after a quick turn of pace in the circle from Gracie C, while the second came from a clinical counter attack with Amelia scoring her second of the day. Despite Reading Blue Coat pushing forward in the second half, the College’s defense held firm. Their composure and teamwork ensured they entered the final group game knowing a draw or better would see them through to the National Final.

The College’s final group match against Kirkby Stephen Grammar ended in a goalless draw. Both teams played with high intensity, but the defenses were on top, particularly from captain Rori F who man marked their England player out of the game. The match was tightly contested, with both teams creating a few chances but unable to convert. Despite a number of attempts, the result remained 0-0.

Having qualified for the final, the College faced a talented and determined Latymer Upper team. The match was a thrilling affair, with both teams showing incredible defensive resilience. Despite several chances on both sides, neither team was able to break the deadlock in normal time, and the match went to a sudden-death shuffles shootout.

In the shootout, each team had their opportunity to score, with both goalkeepers rising to the occasion. The College had their chances but were unable to convert, and despite a valiant effort, it was Latymer Upper who edged the shootout. It was heartbreaking for the team, who had played so well throughout the day, but their performance in the final was a testament to their skill and determination under pressure.

The 1st XI may not have come away with the trophy, but to finish runners up and silver medalists is an incredible achievement. Their defense was exemplary throughout the tournament, with the team showing remarkable composure in the face of pressure. The attacking play was fluid, and the team worked well as a unit, ensuring that each player played their part.

The team can be proud of their performances, and while they may have missed out on the title, they certainly proved themselves as one of the top teams in the country.

Congratulations to the team!
