The U13 boys’ hockey team won the regional finals at Bedford on Monday to qualify for the National Independent Association of Prep Schools hockey finals to be held next week at Merchant Taylor’s School.
The team began the day with two convincing wins over Beachborough and St Hugh’s Schools to qualify for the quarter finals. Unfortunately, a loss to Wellesby Prep in the last group game meant the team finished in second place and had to play Winchester House (winners of Group 2). In an even game which finished 1-1, the match went to flicks and captain Benedict A, Freddie O’B, and Remi P expertly dispatched their flicks and with Reuben A saving Winchester’s first flick, the team advanced to the semi finals against Bilton Grange.
Under heavy pressure from the start, it needed some excellent saves from Reuben A to keep the scores level. As the match progressed the College came into the game more and a couple of big opportunities were missed. The match once again headed to flicks and Reuben made an excellent diving save to help the team progress to the final.
The boys saved their best performance for the final and goals from Freddie O’B (2), Raff P, and Freddie T saw the team beat New College, Oxford 4-0, to be crowned regional IAPS champions.
